Juha Hurme and the Lapland Student Theatre collaborate to present a play on an important topic

On Rovaniemi the night of the arts, 7.9.2024, the play One Hundred Years of Sickness will be premiered on the stage of the Wiljami Cultural Centre. The play examines the experiences of Finnish soldiers on the German Eastern Front in World War I and II. The play reflects on the impact of the soldiers’ experiences on the lives of three generations. The traumas of the past in those who lived through the war and in their descendants have a very long-lasting impact. The events of the war before the Civil War of 1918 are accumulated and passed on as a burden from one generation to the next until the present day.

The first performance will be directed by writer-director Juha Hurme. In addition to Hurme, the roles will be played by young rising stars from the University of Lapland Student Theatre. The roles include Jussi Jokinen, Elina Pentinsaari, Vilma Ylilauri, Tuomas Ylifrantti, Kaisa Lakkala, Jaakko Nuorva, Mimosa Bäck, Tuomas Toivainen and Eveliina Doroppala. Jaana Kurttila, a long-standing theatre professional, will stage and costume the production . The music will be provided by northern musicians Jukka Tarkiainen and Antti Kero.

The play is related to Erkki Kaila’s doctoral thesis. Its script serves as the artistic part of the thesis. The performance has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
